Settling In

Chamber's Pillar Road

Finke Desert Race track

Old Ghan Road

On coming traffic on Chambers Pillar Road

Liz gave us the morning off to settle in and unpack.  So we did.  We had a quiet start to the day with getting the ‘house’ in order the main priority.  There’s always some reshuffling to do as everything’s packed low for safety when traveling.  Meanwhile Will did the equivalent of his house work – he wiped the patrol windows so that when we set off for a quick four wheel drive expedition we could see where we were going.

Stock in between track and main road -
no fences!
By 11am we were on the old Finke Road that runs alongside the old Ghan Railway line.  It also runs beside the Finke Desert Track which runs beside the Chambers Pillars Road.  The road we were on was the narrowest of the lot, but as you travel it at between 15 -24kms an hour I found it the most comfortable.  The Chambers Pillars Road at 70km an hour had me holding the Sat Nav, CB Radio and anything else down that could be bounced off thanks to corrugations!  And that’s with trucks and cars hurtling towards you as you fish tale gently around in the soft surface – “Still want to do Cape York?” Will asked with a smirk.  “Yes,” I said, more confidently than I was feeling. (But I really do and I’ll be used of it by then!!)

This afternoon we had a wander around the Hall of Fame.  Yes, the Kenworth shed is still looking good, but lots of dusty trucks to be wiped.  Floor looking a lot better than we arrived last year, but a good sweep and some spot mopping will be on order soon – apparently we start in the Kenworth Shed on Monday, we’ll find out tomorrow what we are doing before then.

The sky is blue, the wind fresh and the sun lovely – not quite warm enough to get the jumper off unless you are sitting in a very sheltered spot.  The fridge has been restocked with meat and vegies so it’s time so sit back and enjoy my book.
